Passion and deep inspiration poured out of his writing.
I loved his style of delivering his poetry because it has a way of letting you inside to see the passion and deep inspiration that poured out of his writing. Roberto Styles is a Self Published Poet/Author and his new book release is titled “The Love Jones Diaries.” He has been writing poetry for well over twenty years now. Most may consider his writing style to be very sensual yet passionate.
As a writer, Roberto’s creative energy can come from a combination of things, His love for music which includes Hip-hop, Neo-Soul, Some R&B, Jazz, Blues, Dancehall Reggae and Classic Rock. He also draws inspiration in some cases, from his own personal experiences as well as the stories of many others who he has had the privilege to meet over the years. When his book was still in its development stages, he lost his cousin during his 39th birthday; he was killed in a tragic car accident so Roberto dedicated this book to his memory. Roberto’s goal as a writer is to continue to grow, live, experience and celebrate life as he proceeds forth in his journey.
Roberto is the oldest of one sibling, his sister Genevra has three beautiful children, Leandra(16) Joshua (13) Breaona (7). “I am the proud son of my parents who just celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary (Robert & Jacqueline Moore). My foundation is very spiritually based, always putting God first in my life. In my pursuits, I hope to touch many lives, be the healer of hearts and inspire others to reach for their mark of excellence.”
Where are you from Roberto? Columbus, Ohio
Tell us about your latest news? I have recently signed with Wicked Konnection Publishing and will be releasing my second book titled “Memoirs of my poetic diaries”
When and why did you begin writing? I initially wrote my first poem when I was 13. I didn’t start writing regularly until I was 24. During that time, I was attending a local community college. I would always have an hour between classes so with that free time; I would go either to the library or the student study lounge and just write away. Poetry writing started out as an outlet of release for me, allowing me the freedom to express my thoughts, my desires as well as writing on things that influenced me during that time.
When did you first consider yourself a writer? In 1998, my aunt had read one of my poems that my mother shared with her titled “Gift of Wisdom”. She was so amazed at my talent that she encouraged me to enter a poetry contest which I wound up making it all the way to the semi-finals. After the contest was over, the international library of poetry that sponsored the contest offered to put my poem in an anthology book they were planning on releasing. Once I have seen my poem in print, that I would say was the defining moment.
What inspired you to write your first book? I always had a strong desire to get my work published. I would always share my poetry with friends and family. I realized that this gift for written expression that I have been blessed with, it would amaze me how many lives were touched by my poetry. That’s when I made the decision to do what was needed to see my first project go into print.
Do you have a specific writing style? I would consider my style very raw, passionate yet sensual. Writing from my soul would be the best way to describe it.
How did you come up with the title? The title of my first book symbolizes my love for writing poetry.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? Mainly that no matter what obstacles you may be faced with, you can overcome anything if you put your trust in God.
What books have most influenced your life most? The Color Of Culture by Mona Lake Jones, Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice By Dennis Kimbro, The Tongue: A Creative Force by Charles Capps & The Rose That Grew From The Concrete by Tupac Shakur.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? Walter Mosley
What book are you reading now? Finding My Happy By Michelle Bullock, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiosaki
What are your current projects? My next two projects will be “Memoirs of my poetic diaries” and a book of erotic poetry titled “Passions Inferno”
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? The only challenge is coming up with fresh, new material.
What was the hardest part of writing your book? During that time back in 2009 when I was putting together “The Love Jones Diaries”. A lot was going on in my life, I had lost my cousin who was killed in a tragic car accident(and may he rest in peace). Dealing with that and so many other challenges I was faced with during that period; I was very close to putting the project on hold but then I thought about my cousin and how he always encouraged me to write, that was all I needed to move forward as I completed this project.
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it? That no matter what challenges I am faced with. I have a strong will and determination to do anything I set my mind to.
Do you have any advice for other writers? Never fall into comparison. God has blessed you uniquely. Learn to appreciate what you have to bring to the table and never let go of your dreams.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? I want to thank everyone who has shown me their support. I thank you for all the emails, the encouragement and mostly; for getting the word out. I will be forever grateful for your efforts.
